Language-specific Considerations
Initially, one might think “Oh well, I can speak English, or French, or German, or Italian, or Portuguese, or Spanish so I might as well target markets abroad, too, using the same content.”
But then, after a while, reality sets in.
- “Why don’t I get any more hits from those regions on my website?”
- “Why don’t people ‘over there’ buy my product(s)?”
- “Why is my competitor doing so much better in that market?”
And, upon taking a closer look, it then turns out that there are numerous language-specific considerations that have to be taken into account in addition to various cultural sensitivities and differences.
Take for example the typically British understated expression of “rather good” which leaves many Americans unfazed, wondering about the lack of enthusiasm for the service or product.
